Local vegetables like ambadi are climate resilient, grow in all conditions, require no labor and can bring relatively easy income to our farmers. Green leaves, red stem Ambadi belongs to the Hibiscus family. Ambadi is longer and more acidic than other greens, which is why it is not affected by microbes during monsoon. It can be safely consumed during monsoon. That is why it is considered the queen of green vegetables. It is available all over the country and is known by different names. Ambadi is its Marathi name, Gongura in Telugu, Sorrel Leaves or Roselle in English, Pitwa in Hindi, Khata Palanga in Oriya and Mestapat in Bengali.

Disadvantages of Ambadi

1. Ambadi contains high amounts of oxalic acid, excessive consumption of which can lead to oxalate toxicity which can have adverse effects by damaging the kidney, liver and gastrointestinal tract.

2. Ambadi can cause acidity in some individuals. Acidity is usually caused by painkillers, antibiotics, untimely meals, processed foods and excessive use of tamarind and spices in food. Boil the ambadi for 10 minutes and drain the water. Use boiled ambadi to make dal and curries. This will give you relief from the problem related to acidity.

3. It should not be consumed during breastfeeding.

4. People suffering from skin allergies and asthma should avoid Ambadi.

It comes in two varieties, green stem leaf and red stem leaf. The red stemmed variety is more sour than the green stemmed variety. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are the best producers of Gongura.
