Moulsiri's identity

For Indians, the Bakul tree (Mimusops allengi) has great mythological and religious significance. It is mentioned in many ancient Hindu texts and also in Ayurveda as a medicinal plant. Its flowers are said to signal the emergence of spring or "basant" in India. The whole tree has a pleasant aromatic aura which can be easily recognized by botanists and common people. The white (or yellow) flowers are used as ornaments by tribal women because of their fragrance and beauty. Now, these are common facts that almost every one of us is aware of. But what if you want to grow a Bakul tree in your urban jungle, that is, in a pot? Then you must be aware of all the scientific and realistic facts about Spanish cherry in order to keep it well.

What is maulsiri?

The Spanish cherry is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of 12–15 m. If you do not have a proper garden then you can grow it in your terrace garden. The trunk of the tree is short, with brown outer bark, reddish-brown inner bark and white latex. Its dense round crown is one of its distinguishing features, besides its leaves are up to 10 cm long and 5 cm wide, elliptical, rounded and somewhat shiny. The white flowers are small, star-shaped and beautiful with a creamy-white texture and sweet scent. Bakul jamuns are oblong, one-seeded fruits that turn orange-red when ripe.
