What is Shankhapushpi?
Shankhapushpi is a type of flower and plays an important role in the field of medicine in Ayurveda. According to the color of Shankhapushpi flowers, there are two types - (1) White (2) Blue, but only white colored flowers should be used in medicine. The Shankhapushpi plant is soft and hairy and spreads on the ground. Its branches are long and spread. Its flowers are light white or pink in color, hairy from outside and flask shaped. In addition to the main species mentioned above, the following species are also used in the hilly areas of entire India up to a height of about 3000 m and its vines are found climbing up in the bushes and waste lands and on the roadsides. It has long vines. Its leaves are smooth, linear, pointed and arrow-like. Its flowers are white in color or white with a pinkish tint. Consumption of its roots helps in removing unwanted substances from the stomach through stool. It is mixed in Shankhpushpi. It is used to reduce the effect of snake venom and in the treatment of respiratory diseases. There is mention of the use of Shankhapushpi in the Brahmarasayana of Charaka Samhita and in the treatment of epilepsy. Apart from this, description of Shankhapushpi is found in Agastyahritaki Yoga and Dwipanchamuladighrit for the treatment of cough. Acharya Sushruta has also discussed about Shankhapushpi in Tiktaa Gana and has also explained the method of using the fine powder of Shankhapushpi in children along with Suvarnadi. Shankhapushpi is bitter and cold in nature. According to Ayurveda, Shankhapushpi is a herb which not only keeps the brain healthy but also works as a medicine for many types of diseases. What I mean to say is that the special thing about Shankhapushpi is that it is very beneficial for mental diseases. It also helps in reducing the effects of leprosy, worms and poison. Shankhapushpi not only helps in improving memory but is also beneficial in sex related problems.
